Although it is difficult to attribute its invention to a single person, Latte Art as we know it emerged in the 1980s. Specifically, some baristas began experimenting with the technique of pouring milk foam into cappuccinos, creating unique decorative motifs.
In 2005, the first world competitions were held. Thanks to globalization and social media, this technique has gained popularity, becoming a symbol of aesthetic research in coffee making. Today it is increasingly appreciated and studied by baristas around the world.
Making a state-of-the-art latte art requires a combination of technique, precision and creativity. Each barista develops his or her own style, creating unique and original designs to delight customers through one of two main techniques: free pouring and etching.
– Free pouring involves pouring milk foam directly into the cup to create a design, such as a heart, rosette, and tulip. This technique requires a steady hand and precision in controlling the flow of milk;
– “Etching”: involves using a tool, such as a nib, to draw on the surface of the coffee, often adding details or creating more complex designs.
To create the perfect latte art, it is essential to master both the technique and the skills, which are necessary not only for decoration, but also for preparing the ideal foam.
